Residents and Neighbors
On behalf of the Piedmont Heights Civic Association, please see our position and comments below regarding SAP BL-17-063, Gas Station Proposal at 1896 Piedmont Rd and Piedmont Circle.
The Piedmont Heights Civic Association was informally approached some months back regarding a gas station proposal on the property at Piedmont Rd and Piedmont Circle. At that time, The PHCA board members were polled and the opinions were unanimous that they were not in favor of a gas station at that location and the opinion of PHCA remains unchanged.
PHCA is in favor of improvements to this and neighboring properties but the board adamantly believes another gas station would not be a positive addition to our neighborhood, nor would it support the BeltLine’s initiative for the following reasons:
– The immediate area within a block is already serviced by 3 gas stations with more in nearby areas.
– The proposed location is already very congested on both Piedmont Rd and Piedmont Circle. Further concentration of automobile traffic in this location will serve only to increase grid lock and congestion.
– PHCA favor’s the overlay district requirements and this does not meet those with regards to the site plan. For example, the placement of the pumps between the building and street do not adhere to the overlay requirements. To be clear, however, we are not in favor of site plan improvements to allow this development to move forward. We are opposed to another gas station.
– The addition of a gas station at this location within the overlay district does not support the BeltLine’s goal of putting “Atlanta on a path to 21st century economic growth and sustainability”. Supporting more automobiles on our roads is what led us to our current grid locked situation, it will not solve it.
While we are encouraged there is interest in improving this property, PHCA is not in favor of another gas station that is in no way symbiotic with the BeltLine.
Copies of the plan are included in this email.
